I was able to fix these by manually making the directory and then giving it to the mysql user.

At that point you will get a different error message if you dont provide the correct password.

Copy and save that.

If not done somehow on successive re-installations it does not show that password.

I tried the packaged installer and had numerous problems with it.

I instead used a.tar.gz package and unpacked it to the right location, created the symbolic links and updated the permissions, ran scripts, etc manually.

Even after that - sometimes it would run, the next time I tried, it wouldnt.

However, every time I test a connection there is an error message that says.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing my workbench 6.1 and mysql server 5.6 but the error is still unsolved.

Even if I try using localhost as my hostname it still doesnt work.

Typically the directory is something like C:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Server x.x.

Ive installed fresh mysql at Ubuntu but I left mysql password empty, and as a result I couldnt connect to mysql in any way.

Lately Ive revealed that there is a table of users where are names, hosts, passwords and some plugins.

So for my user rootlocalhost mysql while installing assigned a plugin called authsocket, which let Unix user root log in as a mysql user root without password, but dont allow login as another Unix user.

So to fix that you should turn off this plugin and set usual authentication.

This allows for some greater security and usability in many cases, but it can also complicate things when you need to allow an external program (e.g., phpMyAdmin) to access the user.

To configure the root account to authenticate with a password, run the following ALTER USER command.

Then I could add a user other than root (on ubuntu, I dont know the root password).

I dont know why, but whenever windows (7) auto updated on my server i would have the same error.

I check with my IT department, but they couldnt figure it out either.

I only installed workbench 6.2 at first, when connecting to localhost it failed.

Launch Services and look for MySQL xx ( xx depends on your MySQL version) in the long list of services.

I had the same issue and I downgraded my mySQL work bench and tried it.

I noticed that Visual Studio 2019 gave an error that my program could not connect to the MySQL server, so I opened my MySQL Workbench and there I could also not connect.

For some reason it first updated my MySQL workbench before I could install MySQL server (maybe I read to fast).
